Our mission is to facilitate mutual support among informal educators. We aim to build an online community of practice for teachers who work beyond the traditional classroom.
What’s a podcast?
A podcast is an audio program, like a radio show. You can listen to them on a web site, just like this one, but most people listen to podcasts using special apps on their phones, like Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
What’s the Classroom Beyond?
The Classroom Beyond is a podcast where I have conversations with informal educators like docents and coaches. About once a week, I release a new episode where we talk about the process of teaching when you’re not in a classroom.
Why make a podcast of conversations with informal educators?
I feel like we informal educators have a lot in common. My goal is to curate a Community of Practice for the world of informal education – a place to share what works best about informal education. Whether you’re a museum floor docent or a trail naturalist, I think you have some valuable wisdom and experiences to share with the rest of us. I strive for a conversational, positive tone about what works best in our field.

No, The Classroom Beyond is free.
How do I find out if there’s a new episode?
There are a few ways. If you use a podcast app on your phone, follow us and your app will let you know when a new episode is available. You can also sign up for the e-mail newsletter.
Who are you?
My name is Graham Charles. I’ve been an outdoor educator, naturalist, youth mentor, and classroom teacher for about 30 years. One of my absolute favorite things is to talk to other educators, informal or otherwise. Feel free to get in touch!
